Crayhon Research has carefully chosen to omit beta carotene from this formula. This is due to recent research which urges caution with beta carotene supplementation. Even supplementing with natural, nonsynthetic beta carotene extracted from carrots has been found to increase the formation of precancerous squamous metaplasic cells in the lungs of ferrets not exposed to cigarette smoke (Nutr Rev. 2002 Mar;60(3):88-90). While low dose beta carotene may not have this effect (Carcinogenesis, Vol. 21, No. 12, 2245-2253, December 2000), we urge caution with beta carotene supplementation until this matter is sorted out (J Nutr. 2004 Jan;134(1):262S-268S). For the time being, we recommend that patients receive their beta carotene from fruits and vegetables. Amidst the synergistic blend of nutrients found in food, and in the moderate amounts found in food, beta carotene appears to be only beneficial.

Lutein and lycopene are the two most important carotenoids to supplement with, far more so than beta carotene. Many do not receive lutein and lycopene on a daily basis. And, in contrast to beta carotene, lutein and lycopene have no known downside. Lycopene is important for supporting prostate health and lutein is crucial for supporting eye health (Optometry. 2004 Apr;75(4):216-30). Lycopene in particular appears safe and even protective for lung cells (Cancer Res. 2003 Jun 15;63(12):3138-44).

Vitamin A is likewise omitted from Body Vibrance, as we feel this nutrient should be derived from food and individually dosed for each patient according to his or her metabolic needs. For some patients, regular doses of 25,000 IUs of vitamin A may be undesirable for long-term liver health (Gastroenterology. 1991 Jun;100(6):1701-9).

Body Vibrance Packets are designed to be taken either once or ideally twice per day, one with breakfast, one with lunch or dinner. When taking two packets per day, patients will receive 800 IUs of vitamin D. This dose reflects the latest research on Vitamin D, which suggests that the ideal dose of vitamin D for adults may 1000 IUs per day (Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 Mar;79(3):362-71). The calcium and magnesium ratio in this formula is 1:1, designed to replicate the ratio of these two minerals in our Paleolithic diet. Two packets per day of Body Vibrance will yield a dose of 400 mg per day of both calcium and magnesium. It is important for men not to consume more than 800 mg of calcium per day, as very high calcium intake may have negative consequences for long-term prostate health (Am J Clin Nutr. 2001 Oct;74(4):549-54).
