These bright red, raspberry medallions are sweetened with xylitol, the natural, beneficial sweetener with a glycemic index of 7, which supports the health of teeth and gums. Brain Power Sours are perfect for people of all ages who want to support their brain wellness and nourish their serotonin system with glycerophosphocholine (GPC), carnitine, and inositol. These utterly unique chewy candies are by far the most enjoyable way to give those you love—and yourself—these important brain nutrients every day. Sugar-free.

Brain Power Sours are also fructose-free. Designs for Health recommends avoiding bars and meal replacement products that contain fructose and fruit sugar concentrates. Why? Fructose worsens insulin resistance and depletes antioxidants. Fructose may also accelerate the aging process by promoting glycation—one of the most deleterious reactions in the body that leads to cell deterioration.

L-CARNITINE TARTRATE
According to a study titled "Efficacy of carnitine in the treatment of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder", the authors concluded that treatment with carnitine significantly decreased the attention problems and aggressive behavior in boys with ADHD.1 Carnitine also plays a critical role in fat burning, making it a great aid in promoting sports endurance. Fat is the #1 fuel our body uses in endurance sports, and research shows carnitine enhances aerobic performance, allowing athletes to exercise longer without fatigue.

INOSITOL
Inositol is an important vitamin-like compound needed for liver health, brain health, and for the optimal functioning of the serotonin system. Human research suggests that supplementing with inositol helps maintain normal mood levels.

GLYCEROPHOSPHOCHOLINE
If you need to be "on your game" and let nothing get by you, then you want to make sure to take plenty of glycerophosphocholine (GPC). GPC has been called the "focus nutrient" for its ability to help the brain stay energized and on task. GPC helps supply the brain with a ready source of choline. Choline, in turn, helps the brain make its main alertness neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. GPC has been studied in over 4,000 adults in 19 trials, and has been found effective at promoting brain wellness in young and old alike.

XYLITOL: THE SWEET TASTE THAT'S GOOD FOR YOU
Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, is a naturally-occurring sweet compound found in nature that not only is devoid of the downside of typical sugars, but also boasts a range of health benefits. Unlike table sugar or fruit sugar, both of which need to be consumed in minimal amount for optimal health, xylitol actually promotes our health, and is something we should consume every day for maximal dental and overall wellness. Because xylitol is completely natural, it is devoid of the undesirable side effects seen with artificial sweeteners. Xylitol may also be the ideal sweet compound to use with those who have intestinal yeast overgrowths, because xylitol does not feed yeast as sugar does.

Xylitol is a five carbon sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols naturally occur in food, and have nothing to do with regular alcohol. Xylitol is found in many fruits and vegetables, an is even produced by the human body itself. Xylitol supplements are made from the fiber of the birch tree. Xylitol is just as sweet as sucrose, tastes as good, and has no after-taste. Xylitol also has 40% less calories than sugar, with a caloric value of 2.4 kcal/gm.

XYLITOL HELPS YOU GET OFF THE SUGAR ROLLER COASTER
Xylitol, unlike sugar, causes little change in blood sugar and insulin levels. This means that xylitol will not sabotage your mood or energy like sugar can. When you want something sweet, use xylitol to sweeten your foods and beverages, because xylitol will not bounce your blood sugar up and down. Xylitol will help you stay on an even keel, give you the sweet taste you love, and allow you to have the dietary and craving control you need.

How does xylitol keep you in such a balanced state? When you eat xylitol, a portion of it is metabolized in the liver to glucose, and this occurs so gradually that you will not have the sugar extremes in your blood that can lead to the loss of control of eating habits. Much of the xylitol also passes on to the large intestine where it is converted into short chain fatty acids which nourish the colon wall. This is the reason why xylitol has less calories than sugar-it's energy potential is used up in this conversion to short chain fats, making xylitol uniquely low in calories.

NATURAL IS ALWAYS BETTER
Because xylitol is naturally occurring in the body and a natural part of human metabolism, it does not have any of the possible health risks that are present in synthetically created artificial sweeteners. Companies that make artificial sweeteners have to create a new compound never seen before in nature—Frankenstein molecules—in order to make them patentable and profitable. Because of that, artificial sweeteners will never be a natural and friendly part of human metabolism like xylitol is. Always choose xylitol!

FIGHTING TOOTH DECAY
Xylitol might be one of the most valuable tools we have to promoting strong teeth. Cavities are formed when the wrong kind of bacteria are given an environment in which they can grow. Regular sugar needs to be avoided for healthy teeth and gums, because sugar feeds the bacteria that destroy our teeth. Xylitol, however, does not feed these bacteria. What's more, xylitol interferes with many of the destructive elements that cause cavities by inhibiting microbial growth and reducing the amount of plaque and the number of mutans streptococci in both the plaque and saliva.2 A study conducted from 1989 to 1993 showed that chewing xylitol gum was more frequently associated with the arrest of caries than sorbitol or sucrose gums. Using the xylitol gum regularly actually had the effect of repairing caries lesions.3 In another two year study, children who used two or three xylitol gums per day experienced a caries reduction of 30% and 60% respectively. In a sub-group with high caries activity, reductions of 50% and 80% were achieved with 2-3 gums per day.4

XYLITOL SHOWS PROMISE FOR DIABETICS
Xylitol does not require insulin to be metabolized, and is therefore a very useful sweetener for diabetics. Xylitol scores a 7 out of a 100 on the glycemic index, which shows that xylitol has a minimal impact on blood sugar and insulin levels. A study of healthy men examined the metabolic response to xylitol. After an overnight fast, the men took a dose of 25 grams of xylitol, and their rise in their blood sugar and insulin was less than after they consumed glucose.5 In another study, a 30 gram dose of Xylitol produced only a small increase in blood sugar and no rise in insulin levels, suggesting that xylitol is safe even in high doses.6 While xylitol appears to be completely safe, diabetics who are interested in using large amounts of xylitol over the long term should do so with the guidance of their health care practitioner.
