It is becoming increasingly recognized that loss of cognitive function and memory with age can be decelerated by the provision of certain nutritional components. Similarly there is increasing evidence that increased intake of these nutrients can improve cognitive function and task performance in the younger person.

Phosphatidylserine is the major acid phospholipid in the brain. It is critical to efficient cell-to-cell signaling in the brain and supplementation appears to improve the efficiency of this function as well as stimulating acetylcholine release. In one study, elderly patients (65 ? 93 years) were given 300mg of phosphatidylserine per day for six months. These then showed significant improvement in mental function and mood over the placebo group (Senacchi et al, 1993).
Ginkgo biloba increases cerebral blood flow, thereby increasing oxygen and glucose uptake by brain cells. This effect may account for the observation of greater clarity of thought, improved memory and better concentration in subjects taking Ginkgo biloba.
Taurine is present in high concentrations in the brain and is essential in neonatal brain development. Its role is to normalize the cell signaling process in the brain by orchestrating correct flux of Na+ and Ca++ in and out of the cell Human studies have demonstrated that boron supplementation at the level of 3mg per day appears to improve cognitive function and alertness (Penlan 1994).
Acetyl carnitine improves brain function by mimicking acetylcholine, acting as a free radical scavenger, improving brain energy output and stabilizing cell membranes.
