Research indicates that newborns and infants with higher levels of nourishment from Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) found in breast milk (and some European formula) have quicker brain growth and development, higher IQs, and more rapid visual development.

Recommended Intake:

DHA is the primary structural fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain and retina of the eye. DHA is an essential nutrient for eye development and for mental and visual function. Humans obtain DHA from their diets, initially through the placenta and from breast milk, but these levels are commonly low in pregnant and breast feeding women. DHA is commonly added to infant formula in Japan and Europe, but unfortunately has still not been added to US infant formulas. In addition, vegetarians eating no fish have very low to no DHA in their body.

Recent research now strongly indicates that a deficiency of DHA and AA in pregnancy and especially following birth, results in low levels of these fatty acids in brain tissue. This in turn can lead to impaired brain development in terms of cognitive functions, memory and intelligent quotient of the child. The effects of deficiency of DHA and AA in the critical periods of pregnancy and in the first few months following birth are largely irreversible.
