The cell mediated immune pathways are less well understood than the antibody mediated part of the immune system. The cell-mediated immune system is involved in primary defense against invasive microorganisms as well as playing a major role in policing the body against tumorogenic cells. The parameters that regulate the cell-mediated immune system are not completely understood but certain nutritional components are known to potentially stimulate either some or all of the cell-mediated pathways. Echinacea Complex from Pharmax is a combination of the most potent plant-derived immunostimulatory substances. Echinacea: Has broad based immunostimulatory functions, increasing the contents of macrophages, NK cells and Th1 cells (cell mediated). Echinacea has direct anti-viral effects as well as anti-invasive and anti-inflammatory functions via its ability to inhibit hyaluronidase Beta 1,3 glucans: Are polysaccharides that are now known to stimulate the cell mediated immune system in a similar way to Echinacea-derived, arabinose-based polymer material. Cats claw (Uncaria tomentosa): Is a powerful immunostimulatory herb. The major components producing the effect are oxindole alkaloids but proanthocyanadins and tannins also play a role. Cats claw extract shows: Potent stimulation of phagocytosis Significant anti-leukemic cell proliferation activity In-vitro anti-viral effects Clinically, a double-blind placebo-controlled trial in 1996 found Cats claw significantly decreased mutagenic potential in human smokers compared to control (Leon et al., 1996). Other trials have shown positive effects in both HIV patients and arthritis sufferers (Keplinger et al., 1998). Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): This fatty acid derived from meat and dairy products is now known to be associated with significant immune stimulatory effects as well as antimutagenic effects. Due mainly to work over the last 20 years by Professor Mike Parizza of the University of Wisconsin, CLA is rapidly being viewed as an essential fatty acid supplement to the diet. Elderberry extract: Has strong anti-viral activity particularly against influenza and reo-virus.
