How will these tests help me understand what is going on with me?
The systems of the body work together so it is often difficult to know where
to begin to treat a complex process. These tests provide a roadmap that
recognizes these interactions and can point to metabolic blockages that lead to
disease. By uncovering the levels of essential nutrients and digestive system
abnormalities, this can reveal the root causes of your symptoms. This metabolic
map allows us to be able to recommend targeted use of high-quality vitamins,
minerals, and other essential nutrients, putting you more quickly on your
journey to wellness by providing specific correction of nutritional imbalances
targeted to your individual needs. Remember our motto “Test Don’t Guess!”
Why should I be concerned with my level of nutrients?
Nutrients, especially B-vitamins and minerals, allow enzymes in our bodies to
perform their functions in converting one molecule to another. If specific
nutrients are not available in adequate amounts, important reactions cannot
occur as well as they should. The reactions that occur daily in your body are
turning food into energy, growth, maintenance and repair of body tissue. Like
spark plugs that ignite fuel in a car engine, vitamins and other essential
nutrients are necessary for these chemical reactions that power your metabolic
machinery. Thousands of these reactions occur in your body every second and are
the basis of your level of health and vitality.
B-vitamins are involved in neurological function and are critical for
childhood development and learning, as well as healthy brain aging. B-vitamins
are involved in many critical processes including energy production, protein
metabolism, digestion, and muscle and nerve function. Even modest B-vitamin
insufficiencies can compromise adequate energy production, leading to poor
stomach acid secretion and digestive disturbances, such as impaired carbohydrate
metabolism.
Insufficiency of B-vitamins tends to be common since they are not stored as
efficiently as other vitamins in the body. A variety of disorders have been
associated with a lack of B-vitamins, including memory loss, dementia, migranes,
hair loss, anemia, dermatitis, immune deficiencies, depression, nervous system
dysfunction, and muscle weakness. Vitamin B6 insufficiency has been associated
with problems with balance, fatigue, mental/emotional stability (such as PMS and
ADHD), autism, and insulin and blood sugar regulation, which can contribute to
diabetes. Even mild insufficiencies cause elevation of a well-known
cardiovascular disease risk factor, homocysteine.
Antioxidant status is important to help slow the aging process and prevent a
variety of degenerative diseases. Risk for certain kinds of heart disease,
cancer, and hypertension are increased in antioxidant status is low.
What contributes to nutrient insufficiencies?
Use of many medications (e.g. oral contraceptives, statins, antihypertensives,
antibiotics, anticonvulsant therapy), exposure to tobacco smoke, pesticides, and
other agricultural products. Metabolic factors like physical exertion, high
stress, pregnancy, injuries and surgeries can cause the body to use extra
amounts of certain B-vitamins and other nutrients. Abnormal digestive function
can impair absorption of some. Diet can also play a big role on a daily basis,
lack of vegetables and other nutritious foods.
How will the Organic Acid Profile help me?
High levels of organic acids on your report indicate specific nutrient
insufficiencies that may be affecting your health. Other organic acids come from
toxins you have been exposed to, and still others show how your body is
responding to toxins. When these are high on your Organic Acid Profile, you may
benefit from therapies that support your body’s detoxification processes and
improve your nutritional status.
Detoxification is important for the elimination of environmental toxins and
certain chemicals the body created in the body itself. This process is critical
to health. Like a backed-up sewer, an impaired detoxification system can lead to
many problems. Brain fog, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, chemical and
food sensitivities, and a variety of chronic health problems have been related
to toxicity issues.
Besides uncovering nutrient insufficiencies, cellular energy levels and your
level of detoxification ability, this test will allow us to determine your how
well your nervous system makes and uses important neurotransmitters.
Abnormalities in this area can relate to symptoms of mental, emotional, and
behavioral problems. This can lead to depression, sleep disturbances, inability
to deal with stress, and fatigue. Uncovering these abnormalities can help us
help you by addressing the source of the stress and improving the body’s ability
to handle stress. Additionally, we’ll be looking at the level of inflammation
and intestinal microbial balance markers going on inside.
In health, beneficial intestinal bacteria produce some B-vitamins and provide
stimulus for proper immune function. However, if your stomach acid is not
adequate, if you fail to digest protein, or if your diet does not supply
sufficient fiber, the resulting overgrowth of unfavorable bacteria can release
toxic products that your body must remove. This test will determine the level of
these by-products you are producing, and give indication of the level of
dysbiosis and unfriendly intestinal microorganisms living and multiplying in
your intestinal tract. This will help us guide you in benefiting from consuming
extra sources of favorable organisms (called probiotics).
What other benefits will I get by doing the other tests in the
Comprehensive Metabolic Profile?
These other tests will help give a more complete picture of your overall
health.
- The Lipid Peroxides will let us know about the level of oxidative
stress caused by free radical damage and will help us guide you to better
health with improving your antioxidant status.
- The Fatty Acid Profile will reveal the level of balance with the
fatty acids in your body, thus enabling us to make diet and supplement
recommendations to correct imbalances for proper brain and nervous system
function, and reducing the level of inflammation that can lead to heart
disease.
- The IgG Food Allergies test will help us identify common foods that
may be adding to your problems. Food intolerances, sensitivities and allergies
have been implicated in everything from skin disorders to autoimmune disease.
Symptoms can be extraordinarily diverse, ranging from arthritis to eczema to
migraines. For this reason, we routinely consider these in evaluating your
health problems. This tests for sensitivity to the most common foods and helps
us design a diet that eliminates and/or alternates the offending foods,
alleviating your symptoms.
