You will be impressed.

Autism & Asperger's Syndrome
Autistic and Asperger's children have been found to be particularly deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids having lower levels in their red blood cells than other children. Numerous scientific trials show that supplementation with fish oils improves their language development and learning skills.

A recent clinical trial by Louise Patrick, SLP and Ronald Salik, MD assessed eight developmental parameters of children on days 0, 45, and 90 of fish oil supplementation. Results showed that all children displayed significan increases in their language and learning skills based on the ABLLS (p-value <0.0044).

ADHD
Omega 3 fatty acids have also been shown to be effective in developmental behavioral dysfunction in children. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1995 reported that 53% of children with ADHD had significantly lower concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids than the control children.

    Child Brain Development
The importance of DHA in the development of the infant brain during pregnancy and the neonatal period is now widely recognized:

  • DHA and AA (Arachidonic Acid) are essential for the correct development of the fetal brain and mental ability. Neural development and eye function may be adversely affected by inadequate supply (The British Nutrition Foundation)
  • 11% of the weight of the brain is the fatty acid DHA
  • Experts now agree that intake of the guideline 0.5-1.8g per day of EPA/DHA is of absolute importance during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
  • Clinical Evidence:

  • Supplementation of DHA and arachidonic acid to formula milk fed to infants for four months produced a significant increase in measurable blood levels of DHA and also a significant improvement of cognitive function at 18 months. (Birsh et al, Dev.Med.Child Neurol.,2000)
  • Supplementation of DHA to breastfeeding mothers for four months following birth improved parameters of cognitive function such as vocabulary and comprehension in the infants.(Clin.Nutr.,2002)
  • Mental Alertness, Cognitive Function, and Depression:
The fish oil fatty acids, EPA and DHA, have recently been found to be heavily involved in the regulation of mood and behavior. This is logical given that these fatty acids are the building blocks of brain and nerve cells, and hance their relative concentration in our neural cells is highly likely to affect both our mood and behavior.

    • Individuals suffering from depression have significantly lower levels of DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids.
    • Populations with higher consumption of fish have lower rates of depression than those with lower consuption
    • Studies have shown that Alzheimer's disease in the elderly is more common in people with low blood levels of DHA

    Clinical Evidence:

  • Elderly patients receiving DHA supplementation experienced a significant reduction in apathy and social withdrawl compared to those without DHA supplemenatation (Cenacchi et al, Aging Clin.Exp.Res.,1993)
  • A large study of 815 people aged between 65 and 94 found that after 4 years, those who ate fish once per week or more had a 60% lower incidence of Alzheimer's onset than those who ate fish either rarely or never (Clare Morris et al,Archives of Neurology, 2003)
  • Heart disease & stroke
The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils increase good cholesterol (high density lipoproteins, HDL) in the blood while decreasing bad cholesterol (triglycerides). Furthermore, these omega-3 oils protect the heart by preventing the formation of blood clots and fatty deposits (plaque) on the arterial walls. In people with coronary heart disease, fish oils may help to reduce the risk of blood clots in the brain or in the lungs; pain associated with angina; and the risk of cardiac arrhythmias. Fish oils also help to maintain healthy circulation.

Investigation of the possible benefits of fish oils began when researchers discovered that Eskimos rarely suffer from heart attacks or rheumatoid arthritis even though their diet is high in fat from fish, seals, and whales. Because these sources of fat have a high omega-3 fatty acid content, it was discovered that the type of fatty acid that they contained helped to protect the Eskimos from the usual consequences of high-fat diets. The Eskimos high omega-3 fatty acid diet helped decrease their risk of heart attacks, strokes and abnormal heart rhythms.

A study of 20,551 doctors who ate at least one fish meal per week cut their risk of heart attacks in half compared to those who ate fish once a month or less. In the 5-year Lyon study, men who followed a Mediterranean diet with emphasis on omega-3-rich oils and fish, fruits and vegetables had their heart attack rates reduced by 70% compared to subjects in the control group.

    General Health
Omega-3 fatty acids are critical components of a healthy diet. The body cannot manufacture Omega-3s and must obtain them from either food such as flaxseeds, fish, and walnuts, or through supplementation. The most important types of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils are Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). The body needs EPA to produce prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances that help to protect the heart and the cell membranes. DHA is required for the normal development of the brain, the eyes, and the reproductive system.

Link between Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intake and Bone Mineral Density

Self-Reported Dietary Intake of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Association with Bone and Lower Extremity Function

Summary:  In a cross-sectional study involving 118 male and 129 female older adults, subjects consuming lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids intake (<1.27 g/d) were found to have lower BMD (bone mineral density), as compared to subjects with higher omega-3 fatty acids intake. The mean reported intake of omega-3 fatty acids in this group of older adults was low overall (1.27 g/d). No independent relationship was found between omega-3 fatty acid intake and lower extremity function. The authors conclude, "Results from this preliminary report are promising and suggest further investigation."
