Foresterol
Foresterol™ by Designs for Health contains Reducol®, a phytosterol mixture – not from soy but from non-GMO tall oil from the coniferous pine tree. Reducol has significant LDL cholesterol lowering properties as evidenced by research and years of clinical use, so much that the FDA allows cholesterol lowering claims for plant sterols. Foresterol™ consists mainly of the 4 major phytosterols: beta-sitosterol, campesterol (in the free sterol form, not as sterol esters) and campestanol, sitostanol.
How Does Foresterol™ Lower Cholesterol?
When ingested, phytosterols inhibit absorption of cholesterol, thereby lowering plasma total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. Foresterol™ consists mainly of the 4 major phytosterols: beta-sitosterol, campesterol (in the free sterol form, not as sterol esters) and campestanol, sitostanol. It has been shown to inhibit absorption of both dietary and biliary cholesterol from the small intestine, therefore even vegetarians with no dietary cholesterol benefit from Foresterol™.
It is important to know that much of the cholesterol found in serum is derived from intestinal reuptake of cholesterol that has been deposited into the intestine from the liver and gall bladder.
What Is The Source Of Foresterol™?
The phytosterol mixture Foresterol™ is sourced from coniferous trees which are non-genetically modified unlike alternative phytosterol products that are obtained from potentially GMO soybean and/or rapeseed oil seed.
Proven Efficacy Reducol®, the active ingredient in Foresterol™, is so effective at lowering cholesterol that the FDA authorized cholesterol lowering claims with the assertion that it may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Reducol® has also been granted GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status by the FDA.
According to research by de Graaf et al, ingestion of 1.8 g of Reducol® per day (3 Caps of Foresterol) for four weeks in persons with baseline elevations of plasma cholesterol, total cholesterol was reduced by 6.4% and LDL cholesterol was reduced by 10.3%. Levels of plasma HDL cholesterol and triglycerides were not affected.7 Researchers also note although reduction in cholesterol absorption is partially re-compensated by an increase of cholesterol synthesis, this increase is not large enough and consequently, plasma circulation of total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (bad cholesterol) is reduced.6 In another study, Jones of McGill University notes that sterol supplementation significantly decreased the estimated cholesterol concentrations within small, medium, and large LDL particles by 13.4, 13.5, and 14.4% respectively.4 He quotes, “Plant sterols and exercise favorably alter lipid profiles in a way that protect against future coronary heart disease (CHD).”
Niacin Supreme
Niacin Supreme combines no-flush niacin (inositol hexanicotinate) with key B vitamins and chromium for cholesterol and triglyceride lowering. Research suggests that one should not take niacin without folic acid, B6 and B12, thus these additional vitamins have been included in the formula. Niacin alone raises homocysteine, but with these other B vitamins, this is unlikely to occur. Chromium helps to potentiate many of niacin's beneficial effects. This form of Niacin is recommended for those who need larger amounts since it is safe and does not cause flushing.
How does the body use niacin?
The body uses vitamin B3 (niacin) in the process of releasing energy from carbohydrates. It is needed to form fat from carbohydrates and to process alcohol. The niacin form of vitamin B3 also regulates cholesterol, though niacinamide does not.
What is the difference between niacin and “no flush niacin”?
Vitamin B3 comes in two basic forms-niacin (also called nicotinic acid) and niacinamide (also called nicotinamide). A variation on niacin, called inositol hexanicotinate, is also available in supplements. Since it has not been linked with any of the usual niacin toxicity in scientific research, doctors recommend inositol hexanicotinate for people who need large amounts of niacin and do not care for the “flushing” reaction.
Are there any side effects from taking Niacin Supreme?
No. The inositol hexanicotinate form of niacin, which is the form that is in Niacin Supreme, has not been linked with the side effects associated with niacin supplementation. In contrast, those taking other forms of niacin often get the hot “flushing” reaction.
Pantethine Supreme
This new formula from Designs for Health contains two powerful ingredients known for their energizing abilities and for their ability to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Pantethine is a unique form of the B vitamin, pantothenic acid, needed to make coenzyme A which transports fatty acids to cells. Carnitine also transports fatty acids into the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, so they can be burned to make energy. In the case of oxygen shortage, fatty acids may not get burned which can result in angina as they accumulate in the heart muscle.
UltraTrienols Plus
This cholesterol support product is now better than ever. In addition to the tocopherol-free Annatto Tocotrienols (formerly called UltraTrienols), this formula now also includes the heavily researched polyphenol, resveratrol, along with Neptune Krill Oil. Krill oil has a unique biomolecular profile of phospholipids naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and diverse antioxidants significantly different from the usual profile of fish oils.
