It is now becoming increasingly acknowledged that the ratio EPA to DHA contained in fish oils is relatively unimportant compared to the provision of sufficient of these two fatty acids combined. This is because it is now recognized that the designation of DHA as the structural omega-3 fatty acid and EPA as the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid is too simplistic. It is now known that DHA has significant anti-inflammatory capability, and EPA is being demonstrated to have a role in cognitive and behavioral functions of the brain.
However, in the area of brain development in the fetus and neonate, and the implications this has on the fatty acid status of the mother, the evidence clearly demonstrates that it is desirable to provide a balance of fatty acids strongly biased towards DHA.
Studies show that a minimum daily intake of 1,100mg of DHA and an optimum of 2,400mg per day is required during the first and second trimesters—and a minimum of 2,400mg and optimum of 3,600mg of DHA in the third rimester of pregnancy. Similarly, during the breast feeding period, a minimum daily intake of DHA of 1,100mg is necessary to ensure optimal DHA deposition into the brain and neural tissues of the neonate. In addition, these advised levels of intake during pregnancy and lactation are also necessary to ensure that the DHA status of the mother is not compromised—a situation which is strongly associated with increased risk of post partum depression.
Made from the highest grade tuna oil and molecularly distilled to increase DHA concentration and eliminate contaminants, High DHA Finest Pure Fish Oil has been specifically formulated to provide very high levels of DHA sufficient for the mother to easily achieve the required intakes of DHA during pregnancy and lactation.
High DHA Finest Fish Oil is also appropriate for anyone wishing to specifically increase their intake of DHA. Depending on the individual, better results form high DHA intake may occur in depressive disorder and cognitive function improvement in children.
Also, just as with Finest Pure Fish Oil, there is no taste or odor of fish...and essential oil of orange has been added to provide a pleasant taste.

Low Oxidation Manufacturing Process Pharmax Fish Oils are molecularly distilled. In addition, since the purification process does tend to damage and oxidize the oils, their oxidation levels are measured after the purification process, not before (which other companies have been caught doing) in order to reflect the true oxidation value of the oil.
Pharmax uses molecular distillation to purify their oil which is the "gold standard", but it has to be done without any oxygen present . In order to achieve this, Pharmax heats the oil a little bit at a low pressure in a nitrogen atmosphere with no oxygen. The low pressure is used so the boiling point is lower. Then, oxidation levels are tested afterwards.
Link between Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intake and Bone Mineral Density
Self-Reported Dietary Intake of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Association with Bone and Lower Extremity Function
Summary:In a cross-sectional study involving 118 male and 129 female older adults, subjects consuming lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids intake (<1.27 g/d) were found to have lower BMD (bone mineral density), as compared to subjects with higher omega-3 fatty acids intake. The mean reported intake of omega-3 fatty acids in this group of older adults was low overall (1.27 g/d). No independent relationship was found between omega-3 fatty acid intake and lower extremity function. The authors conclude, "Results from this preliminary report are promising and suggest further investigation."

I think this is a good product. I don't ever taste fishy, and they're easy to swallow even though they're large. My skin and my baby's skin is beautiful, so I think they help! I took off one star for price--I wish they were a bit cheaper.

Pharmax was a brand that was recommended to me. DHA is low with children with cystic fibrosis. My son doesn't like the taste but I mix it with fruit juice. I've been pleased with the product and service.
Perfect for Breastfeeding Mothers

I choose this brand of DHA supplement first because it is a Pharmax product and second because its high DHA content is perfect for breastfeeding mothers, supplementing the breastmilk I produce with the DHA my growing baby needs. It has essence of orange, which you can taste after you burp for about an hour, but its not rancid or anything - in fact its a great reminder that I'm giving my son the best breastmilk I can produce.

Better than liquid

I take three to four capsules a day because I am a nursing mother. I also took it during the last part of my pregnancy. I started with the liquid, but it tasted awful and left everything greasy. The capsules are well worth it, and make your baby smart too!

I am taking two to three capsules per day because I am pregnant. I haven't had any problems with this brand and haven't experienced any strange after taste. I've read that taking the high DHA omega 3 fatty acid suplements helps with the brain development of the baby, so we will see in November if they worked!
