Immune Support For Children aged 2 through 12 years
The goals of natural medicine in supporting the child's immune system include:
1. Providing the proper nutrition to help the child's body fend off infection. In addition to a well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and high quality proteins, one may also supplement with a high grade children's multiple vitamin that contains extra vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D (at least 200-400IU per day), and vitamin A.
2. Support a healthy intestinal environment to block infection by intestinal viruses (such as rotavirus and influenza) by supplementing with a probiotic formula. During the cold and flu seasons, probiotics have also been shown to offer protection against respiratory infections by stimulating white blood cell function.
3. Priming the immune system with safe herbals, such as elderberry and echinacea. Recent research, especially in Germany, has vindicated the use of echinacea as a way to prevent some cold and flu infections, as well as to significantly limit their duration.
