Glutamine and Arginine Two amino acids that have attracted a great deal of recent research interest are glutaminine and arginine. They are now classified as conditionally essential and this follows the generation of extensive evidence that: They are required in increased amounts in individuals suffering or recovering from injury or trauma, tumonogenic disease and infections. Supplementation of these amino acids, in addition to dietary intake, can have a positive effect on symptoms and clinical outcome. An example of this is a randomized controlled clinical trial by Hulst et al, 1999 where supplemental glutamine prevented gut permeability and preserved mucosal structure in patients with gastrointestinal disease. - A pure preparation of these two conditionally essential amino acids, noted for:
- Immune stimulation
- GI tract maintenance and repair
- Improved recovery from wound, trauma and infections
- Specifically recommended for GI tract usage
The major physiological function of glutamine and arginine are outlined below:
Serving Size: 5 grams Servings Per Container: 50 Amount Per Serving: - L-glutamine.......4000mg
- L-arginine.......1000mg
Recommended Intake: 15 scoops (15 grams) mixed with water or juice, taken daily with a meal or as professionally directed. Contra-indications: None known if recommended intake is followed. Keep out of reach of children.

Glutamine Activity - Major cell energy source (enterocytes and lymphocytes)
- Precursor to glutathione
- Major nitrogen carrier in body tissues
Physiological Effects Maintains mucosal barrier Prevents gut permeability Improves natural killer cell count Improves immune lymphocyte activity and number Improves glutathione status Preserves muscle mass during trauma and post-operative recovery and illness Overall beneficial effect in cancer therapy Arginine Activity - The major source of nitric oxide
- Stimulates ornithine and proline levels
- Stimulates levels of the following hormones:
Growth hormone, Insulin, Catacholamines, Glucagon, Prolactin Physiological Effects Improves mucosal replacement by stimulating polyamine synthesis Stimulates wound healing and accelerates recovery by hormone stimulation Protects against gut permeability by stimulating nitric oxide production Improves immune status by increasing thymic weight and lympholytic responsiveness Overall appears to be beneficial in cancer therapy Improves immune status, notably when combined with omega-3 fatty acids Arginine is not synthesized efficiently in the body and so deficiency or increased requirement can only be produced from increased dietary intake.
