Every Woman Should Know Her Risk for Breast Cancer

Now You Can with a Simple Urine Test!

When a major study of hormone replacement therapy in women was recently discontinued, clinicians and patients alike were left with unanswered questions. Why are certain tissues, such as the breast, susceptible to estrogen-induced cancer? Why are some women susceptible, but not others? Researchers at Rockefeller University have found that the body metabolizes estrogens into several different metabolites that can impact cancer development.

One metabolite, 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1), tends to inhibit cancer growth. Another, 16-a-hydroxyestrone (16-a-OHE1), actually encourages tumor development. A woman’s "biochemical individuality" determines which of these metabolites predominates. Studies have shown that measuring the ratio of these two metabolites provides an important indication of risk for future development of estrogen-sensitive cancers. The studies also show that this risk is modifiable!

The Estronex™ 2/16 Test from Metametrix Clinical Laboratory measures the ratio of these two critical estrogen metabolites from a single urine specimen. Estronex 2/16 ratios less than 2.0 indicate increasing long-term risk for breast, cervical, and other estrogen-sensitive cancers. Importantly, nutritional interventions can help raise Estronex 2/16 ratios and decrease long-term risk.

The Estronex™ 2/16 Test features:

  • A simple first-morning urine specimen; no blood draw is necessary.
  • Economical, so you can retest often to monitor therapy.
  • Bone Resorption Test can be added for osteoporosis risk assessment at only a small incremental cost.
  • Metametrix quality and reliability backed by over 20 years of experience

Specimen Requirements: 10 ml of first morning urine, frozen

Directions for urine collection
You must be fasting 8 hours prior to morning urine collection. Decrease liquid intake to avoid excessive dilution of the urine, drinking only enough water to quench thirst on the evening prior to the collection. Try not to drink more than 8 oz. after 8 p.m. Do not collect urine during menstruation. It is not necessary to discontinue nutritional supplements or oral hormones prior to this test. Abnormalities that may be found will reveal special needs that have not been met by recent dietary and supplemental intake.

Special Instructions:
Specimen collection is preferred on days 18-25 after the start of your menstrual cycle. Follow-up testing should be done on corresponding days (from initial collection) of your menstrual cycle. Testing not recommended during pregnancy.

NOTE: Timing is not important for post-menopausal women.

Contents of Testing Kit:
Yellow-cap plastic vial, disposable pipette.

1. Put ice pack in freezer & write your name on the collection vial with permanent a marker.
2. Empty bladder before going to bed the night before collection.
3. Collect first morning urine, mid-stream, after an overnight (8 hr minimum) fast.
4. Transfer 13 ml of urine to a screw cap vial and freeze with ice pack. Filled it to ~1/2” from the top of the tube – so LEAVE ½” empty. If you fill any further, the specimen WILL expand when frozen and most likely it will break the cap. Resulting in a mess before or during transport and the sample will not be usable.
5. Dispose of remaining urine.
6. Place the frozen specimen, frozen ice pack, and absorbent pad in biohazard bag for shipping.
7. Ship as soon as possible, Monday through Thursday. If specimen is collected on a Friday, keep frozen and ship on Monday. Please include a completed Test Requisition Form with specimen.

Turnaround Time: Aproximately 10 days.

This test is simple and an absolute must for all women who want to see if they are at risk for breast cancer. If so, there are concrete steps you can take to prevent it.

Sample recommendations for a result showing Estrogen ratio is not in balance:

  • Increase green/cruciferous vegetables. I suggest a large green salad (4-5 cups) and either broccoli, bussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, (1-2 cups) each day. I also suggest you compliment with Paleogreens , a delicious greens drink, which includes broccoli, and many more of your needed greens. I like lemon-lime flavor mixed with water and a splash of fresh lime juice! (1 TBS. daily) http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/product.asp?itemid=918&catid=0
  • Take DIM- please read about this one at the link: http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/product.asp?itemid=1190&catid=0 It is very helpful at improving your estrogen ratio. Take 2 daily.
  • Take Omega 3's- also know to help greatly as a precursor to hormone production. The best Omega-3s are found in fish oil (not flax). Pharmax makes "Finest Pure Fish Oils" which have a mild orange flavor (no fishy taste), and are guarenteed pure from toxins. You can read more here: http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/product.asp?itemid=43&catid=166 These taste fine straight off a spoon or you can blend it into a smoothie. Unless on blood thinners, take 1 TBS daily. Discontinue before surgery.
  • Eat flax seed (not oil)- http://www.rockwellnutrition.com/product.asp?itemid=782 Take 1 TBS. daily with yogurt or a smoothie. If you follow a low fiber diet now, begin with 1 tsp for one week before increasing to 1 TBS.
  • Soy isoflavones are proven to help too. Here is an organic, non GMO (genetically modified) soy protein powder. You can use it in a smoothie with the Pharmax Fish Oil and Paleogreens, and some frozen fruit.
  • Lastly, reduce your sugars and white starches. High sugar causes high insulin which drives up estrogen levels.
Be sure to re-test in 3-4 months to see improvements!

2 to 16 estrogen ratio   11/21/2009
Reviewed by Kitty Pearsall from Georgetown, Texas.
I have been monitoring my 2 to 16 estrogen ratio for nearly 8 years now. Three different labs have done this measurement for me..but the most consistent lab has been Metametrix. The instructions on what to do the 8 hrs prior to collecting the 1st morning urine is critical to the correct measuring of this ratio. I was not aware that this impacts the results.
