New from DFH! Malic Acid is ideal for Fibromyalgia. This new improved form of magnesium is an Albion® mineral chelate bound to malic acid, making it ideal for absorption, the ATP energy cycle, and for the relief of fibromyalgia.

Designs for Health's Magnesium Malate Chelate offers the best chelated minerals sourced from the world’s leader in chelated mineral science, Albion Advanced Nutrition. The magnesium in Magnesium Malate Chelate is now fully chelated to glycine and malic acid, providing a combination of the two most health promoting and most absorbable forms of magnesium available. Malic acid is found naturally in apples and other fruits and vegetables. Glycine is a very low molecular weight amino acid found in foods and can be synthesized by the body. Magnesium can be perfectly chelated to two moles of glycine.

True chelates are not only absorbed better than magnesium salts, but they are retained better in body tissue such as bone. Chelated magnesium is better tolerated than non-bound magnesium salts. Also, the ligands the minerals are chelated to is important as the chelated compound will remain chelated throughout the gut and into the bloodstream. Mineral salts from non-true chelates break apart far sooner, usually in the stomach, leaving the body with the extra compound to deal with. Ionic minerals interfere with the absorption of other minerals including phosphorus and iron whereas chelated minerals do not.

Magnesium: The mineral we lack the most
Studies show that most Americans are largely magnesium deficient due to foods being grown in magnesium depleted soils. This critical mineral is excellent for those with muscle cramps, those under stress (which quickly depletes magnesium), as well as diabetics. Other benefits of magnesium include heart protection, aids detoxification and PMS, promotes bone health, prevents cardiac arrhythmias, and relaxation. Magnesium Chelates is an ideal supplement for anyone who wants a one-per-day magnesium supplement.

  • Read Customer questions and answers about Other Health Concerns in our FAQ.

What are some symptoms that I'm not getting enough magnesium?
Arterial spasm of coronary arteries, diabetes, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, kidney stones, liver disease, malabsorption problems, muscle tremors or twitching, psychiatric problems, and psychological symptoms such as apathy, apprehension, decreased learning ability, confusion, and poor memory all are signs of a possible magnesium deficiency.

Are there any nutrients that help magnesium work more effectively?
Vitamin B-6 should always be used in combination with magnesium therapy for treatment of Autism and ADD/ADHD. For heart health, synergistic nutrients include carnitine, CoQ10, B-complex, and Omega 3s.

Are there any drug contraindications with magnesium?
Amiloride, Ciprofloxacin, Sulfonyureas, Tetracycline, and Warfarin all have contraindications with magnesium citrate.

    Autism
Studies have shown that the average magnesium levels in autistic children are below average. Evidence suggests that autistic children may improve when given large doses of magnesium along with vitamin B6.

    Cardiovascular Disease
When magnesium is supplemented regularly, irregular heart rhythms become more stable, high blood pressure improves, the body keeps a better balance of potassium and other important cardiovascular minerals, the heart pumps a larger volume of blood with no extra demand for oxygen, constricted blood vessels relax, allowing blood to flow more freely, and HDL cholesterol rises and LDL cholesterol falls. [5]

    Acute Heart Attacks
Magnesium, when given intravenously, can stabilize or destabilize the heart. [1]

    Blood Sugar Disorders
Poor sugar control raises the risk of a magnesium deficiency, which in turn further impairs sugar metabolism. How well the body metabolizes sugar is tightly linked to magnesium, making the mineral essential to anyone with diabetes or insulin resistance. [3]

    High Blood Pressure
A person with high blood pressure typically has a lower level of magnesium compared with somebody who has a healthier blood pressure reading. Some hypertension patients reduce or eliminate their need for diuretics and other blood pressure medications by supplementing magnesium and other vitamins and minerals. [4]

    Fibromyalgia
For anyone who copes with muscle or joint pains of this rheumatic ailment, magnesium is a valuable part of an effective treatment. [1]

    Asthma
By diminishing wheezing and encouraging bronchial muscles to relax, magnesium reinforces better breathing for bronchitis, emphysema, and other chronic lung disorders. [1]
    Osteoporosis
For preventing and perhaps reversing osteoporosis, magnesium might be more important than calcium. It balances the body’s calcium supply and keeps it from being depleted. [1]

In this formula some of the magnesium is bound to malic acid and the rest is chelated to the amino acid glycine (low molecular weight and is ideal for both chelating and absorbing magnesium).

    MALIC ACID
Malic acid is a naturally occurring compound found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, the richest source being apples, which is why malic acid is sometimes referred to as "apple acid." Remember the saying: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Apples also contain polyphenols. Malic acid helps to make energy. It plays a role in the complex process of deriving adenosine triphosphate (ATP; the energy currency that runs the body) from food. Research shows that malic acid combined with magnesium may relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia.[7]

    RESEARCH ABSTRACT
Treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome with Super Malic: a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, crossover pilot study. J Rheumatol. 1995 May;22(5):953-8. Related Articles, Links, Russell IJ, Michalek JE, Flechas JD, Abraham GE.

OBJECTIVE. To study the efficacy and safety of Super Malic, a proprietary tablet containing malic acid (200 mg) and magnesium (50 mg), in treatment of primary fibromyalgia syndrome (FM). METHODS. Twenty-four sequential patients with primary Fibromyalgia were randomized to a fixed dose (3 tablets bid), placebo controlled, 4-week/course, pilot trial followed by a 6-month, open label, dose escalation (up to 6 tablets bid) trial. A 2-week, medication free, washout period was required before receiving treatment, between blinded courses, and again before starting open label treatment. The 3 primary outcome variables were measures of pain and tenderness but functional and psychological measures were also assessed. RESULTS. No clear treatment effect attributable to Super Malic was seen in the blinded, fixed low dose trial. With dose escalation and a longer duration of treatment in the open label trial, significant reductions in the severity of all 3 primary pain/tenderness measures were obtained without limiting risks. CONCLUSIONS. These data suggest that Super Malic is safe and may be beneficial in the treatment of patients with Fibromyalgia. Future placebo-controlled studies should utilize up to 6 tablets of Super Malic bid and continue therapy for at least 2 months.

Store in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
