Black cohosh, Cimicifuga racemosa, is antispasmodic and a female reproductive tract tonic. It is especially useful with reproductive tract problems related to congestion, nervous irritability of the reproductive organs, aching muscles, chilliness and irritability or depression. It is tonifying and sedating to the nervous system.
Dong quai, Angelica sinensis, is known for balancing. It is a warming female tonic, enriches the blood, promotes blood circulation and regulates and normalizes menstruation and the menstrual cycle. It is a mild laxative, hepatoprotectant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic 261 It is used for PMS, cramps, menopausal-related symptoms, anemia, uterine bleeding due to stagnation and chronic pelvic infections.
Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, is an antispasmodic, estrogenic and anti-inflammatory herb, which has traditionally been used for its estrogenic activity. 63
Alfalfa, Medicago sativa, is a nourishing herb with estrogenic-like activity in the body, especially the seeds. The isoflavones, formononetin and biochanin A, in alfalfa have weak estrogenic activity.
Phytoestrogens can act as anti-estrogens by competing with estradiol for cytoplasmic receptors in estrogen-sensitive tissues
