Nutritional Remedies for Sinus Infection and Sinus Infection
Since chronic sinus infections are usually a result of bacterial, fungal, or viral infections which are lodged in the sinuses and become inflamed from time to time, we recommend treating not just the inflammation, but also the root cause—which is the chronic infection/immune deficiency. Often times, we find chronic yeast (a fungus) to be responsible for sinus infections. Below are some nutritional/herbal/homeopathic recommendations for long term relief.
To reestablish a healthier systemic microbial balance & improve immune function:
HLC Intensive probiotics by Pharmax—1 cap with each meal for 10-20 days minimum, then switch to HLC high potency powder—1 tsp daily. These are good bacteria which will help overcrowd negative microbes responsible for sinus problems.
Allicillin by Designs for Health—this is a powerful antifungal & microbial—it will help kill yeast and improve immune function. Take 1 cap with each meal, total of 2-3 daily. You may experience some ‘die off’ which is the result of killing yeast/bacteria in your system. It can cause a temporary worsening of symptoms. You can support/prevent this by beginning with just 1 cap of Allicillin per day for the first 3-5 days, then increase to 2 and so on.
For localized inflammation and immune function:
Eyebright-Barberry Compound—works to reduce inflammation in the sinus cavities
Micellized Vitamin A—a particularly absorbable form of vitamin A, crucial in immune health and respiratory health
Oil of Oregano—an effective yeast/microbe killer which works particularly well in the respiratory tract
XtraCell Thymus—for powerful immune support which works every time, even when antibiotics have failed
For System Inflammation Reduction—including the nasal passageways, increase your omega-3 fatty acid intake. Omega-3s work by reducing inflammation in the sinus cavities where bacteria and yeast travel through. Keeping the sinus passageways free of inflammation allows bacteria and yeast to travel smoothly out of your system without lodging and nesting to cause an infection. Omega-3s also support your immune function, brain health and cellular health. We recommend a daily dose of approximately one tablespoon.
Nutritionally, we recommend eliminating dairy and reducing all forms of sugar. Dairy markedly increases mucus production and sugar feeds bacteria and yeast and causes inflammation. Instead include more coconut oil, coconut milk (in smoothies and curries) and shredded unsweetened coconut, which is a natural anti-microbial food. Also support your immune system with lots of green colorful vegetables, organic protein, and healthy fats. Read our Top 10 Dietary Tips list for improved health.
