Preclinical findings presented by Dr.Newman:
Zyflamend® induces apoptosis of PC3 cells, an aggressive, hormone-refractory prostate cancer cell line, in a dose-dependent manner.
Zyflamend® is a potent blocker of TNF induced NF-kB activation. NFKB is a transcription factor that "turns on" genes associated with cancer and inflammation.
Zyflamend® inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and 12-lipoxygenase in a dose-dependent manner. This is important for cancer research since the products of these enzymes, 5HETE and 12HETE, stimulate abnormal cell growth.
13SHODE, an eicosanoid born of 15-lipoxygenase metabolism which controls proliferation of abnormal cell growth in the colon, is present in Zyflamend ® .
Note: plants have anti-inflammatory eicosanoids as well!
Zyflamend® maintains retinoblastoma (Rb) proteins in their unphosphorylated or normal state. Originally discovered in (r)etino(b)lastoma cancers, Rb proteins are now known to be important tumor suppressor proteins in every cell in the body. In their unphosphorylated state, they stimulate cellular differentiation, inhibit proliferation, induce apoptosis and cell senecense. With phosphorylation, this tumor suppressor activity is lost.
Obviously, Zyflamend® is a complex product with a complex mechanism of action.

Two leaders in the field of cancer research, Bob Newman, PhD, Professor of Cancer Medicine and Director of Pharmaceutical Development at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Aaron Katz, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Urology and Director of the Holistic Urology Center at Columbia University, were invited to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to present findings from their ongoing studies on NewMark's Zyflamend ® to the Office of Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
A webcast of Dr. Newman's and Dr. Katz's presentation is now available for public viewing on the NCI website: http://www.videocast.nih.gov/ram/occam061406.ram
Preliminary findings of the Columbia University Zyflamend ®—PIN clinical study presented by Dr. Katz:
All patients (n=29) are now enrolled
No side effects have been found in any patient
All patients are 100% compliant
No alterations in blood chemistry values, EKGs, coagulation profiles or testosterone levels have been found
50% of patients have had a decrease in PSA—46% have had a more than 10% decrease, 27% have had more than 50% decrease
34 repeat biopsies from 20 patients have been performed (biopsies are repeated every 6 months of the 18 month study)
88% have a biopsy negative for prostate cancer
62% of biopsies show a return back to normal prostate tissue
