Q. I'm a male aged 37 yrs suffering from infertility from the past 4 1/2 yrs. My first semen analysis showed sperm motility was only 10%. I used 500mg L-carnitine for about 6 months, but no success. What would you suggest to improve my sperm motility and expect pregnancy in the next 2 or 3 months? Any dietary recommendations?
A. The research which shows results from ALCAR (or L-Carnitine) uses doses higher than what you took. You will want to take 3,200 mg daily of top quality (pure) ALCAR. This equals 4 capsules of ALCAR by DFH split into 2 doses, morning and early afternoon. You will need 1.5 bottles per month.
Continue this practice for 3-6 months, or until conception. Research shows it take 74 days for sperm to mature and another 20 for it to become capable of fertilization. This means at the soonest you could expect results is about 4 months.
Consider adding to your regimen CoQ10 and Alpha Lipoic acid, which both protect and strengthen your mitochondria needed for energy production in your sperm. Other antioxidants are also key in order to prevent mitochondrial/cellular damage. I recommend an excellent supplement by Pharmax, called Endogenous Antioxidants. It includes CoQ10, Alpha Lipoic acid, and several other important antioxidants- vit E, vit C, and NAC (precursor to glutathione). Take 1- 2 daily with meals.
Consume plenty of deep colored vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, and organic protein to ensure healthy cells. Eliminate hydrogenated fats, sugar, and other food chemicals. Have your sperm tested now and again in 4-6 months to measure effectiveness of treatment.
