HLC Mindlinx for Gluten and Casein Allergies

Q.
Is HLC Mindlinx used in the treatment of gluten and dairy allergies? Is it possible to reverse these allergies?

A. Yes, HLC MindLinx is used as a probiotic when someone has a sensitivity or allergy to dairy & or gluten. In many cases of people who are truly and severely allergic to these proteins, they may never resolve. However, many people often develop a sensitivity to these proteins, and this often occurs when these foods are frequently consumed on a daily basis, often in large quantities. This is different than a true IgE mediated allergy, this is known as an IgG mediated delayed hypersensitivity.

When these foods are left out of the diet for a period of time, and the gut has time to heal (often with the help of gut healing nutrients and herbs), some people can resume incorporating them in their diets in small quantities on a rotation diet basis.

HLC MindLinx does helps line the gut with strains of organisms that help degrade these proteins when they are ever ingested, therefore these proteins are not as likely to create such an extreme immune response and the body is better able to properly digest them.

Damage Control After Antibiotics

I need to clear up a huge misconception about antibiotics, yogurt, and probiotics (beneficial bacteria).

Clients regularly complain about all kinds of stomach and yeast issues during and after taking antibiotics. And then they ask me: "If I eat a lot of yogurt, isn't that good enough to put these good bacteria back into my system?"

The answer is "No!". You definitely are not getting enough (or much at all) of the right strains. It can take YEARS to get your intestines back to 100% normal after taking antibiotics, and the sugar-filled pasteurized dairy yogurt often can make things worse.

The most effective way to fix the antibiotic damage is to supplement with a good probiotic like HLC Intensive both during antibiotic use and for at least 2 months after in order to recolonize the good probiotics in your body. If you're trying to replenish with yogurt, you'd have to buy organic full fat yogurt with no sugar and consume a huge amount each day for 1 year and hope it works.

Still not sure if you need probiotics? If you have any ONE of these symptoms regularly, you need to take them:

Symptoms of Deficiency in Probiotics

  • Bloating, Gas & Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • IBS
  • Yeast Infections
  • Candidiasis
  • Difficulty digesting dairy
At Rockwell Nutrition, we carry the very unique line of HLC Probiotics which are made with strains identical to those found in humans (as opposed to those with strains from cows). As such, they are readily recognized by our body, effectively implant, and improve your gut function dramatically! They contain no dairy, wheat, or gluten.

Over my 12 years studying in the nutrition industry, I rank HLC Probiotics in the Top 3 Most Important Supplements for your health.

What Are Probiotics and Do They Work?

Your body contains billions of good bacteria to keep things running smoothly in your intestines. They assist with digestion, help prevent food poisoning, prevent gas, diarrhea, constipation, and yeast overgrowth.

Some probiotics are only moderately effective, but others are true superstars. So, if you're going to take a probiotic, you've got to take one that's proven to work fantastically well!

Our Client reviews for these HLC Probiotics are overwhelmingly positive, especially in comparison to competitor's brands. And Pharmax probiotics are the only kind I've used for myself and my family over the last 7 years.

Which HLC Probiotics Should I Take?

HLC Intensive Capsules
are a great starting point if you've got something actively bothering your GI tract. It contains no FOS so it will not bother you if you have severe yeast issues or a very delicate GI system.

HLC High Potency Capsules are perfect as a daily maintenance product since they contain less bacteria per capsule and are less expensive.

For kids and adults who don't like capsules, HLC High Potency Powder is the equivalent of the High Potency capsules. The powder tastes delicious and can be taken right off the spoon or mixed with any food or beverage (not hot).

HLC Neonate Powder is for infants under 1 year, and HLC Child chewable tablet is for toddlers who want to chew a yummy tablet (tastes like candy, but much healthier!).

For those of you with Gluten or Casein sensitivities or allergies, HLC Mindlinx is the perfect choice. It helps you better digest foods containing gluten or casein.

Probiotic when there is no bifidobacteria
Q. Which probiotic would you recommend for someone who tested to have no bifidobacteria?

A. I would highly recommend HLC Intensive no FOS.
This is a good one to start with to re-colonize your intestines, use 1 cap with meals twice a day for 15 days then, if you do not have bad bacteria in your intestines, then follow with this on day 16:

1 box of HLC Synbiotic. Use 1 packet mixed with water each day for 7 days. Take this with a snack or small meal. Then you can most likely use the HLC Maintenance probiotic.

If you do have bad bacteria, stay on the HLC Intensive until you get rid of the bad bacteria and wait on the HLC Synbiotic. We also have nutritional consultations available if you would like more in-depth help.

HLC Probiotics, Cod Oil, and Colostrum Help IBS
Q. I now take HLC High Potency. What other supplements do you recommend for IBS? Can adults take the HLC Neonate Powder, and if so in what dose?

A. Since you are already taking the HLC High Potency, you could add the HLC Neonate for additional probiotic support because it has the B infantis strain not found in the HLC High Potency. It would be fine to take these both in their recommended dosage.

IBS can also be helped by several other products that support the intestinal walls and decrease symptoms. To add to these probiotics I would also recommend:
  • GI Revive - to help soothe and support your GI, 1 teaspoon mixed with 4 oz water, twice a day. This also comes in capsules if your prefer.
  • Tegricel Colostrum - 1 capsule before meals, 2 per day, to enhance general immune function and to help reduce the annoying and sometimes debilitating effects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It has been suggested to heal and repair damaged tissue from the use of NSAID’s.
  • Digestzymes - these are digestive enzymes along with a little HCL to help with the digestion of your foods. Take 1 with each meal.

How much L. crispatus in HLC Mindlinx and what does "No FOS" mean?
Q. Can you please tell me the count of l.crispatus In HLC Mindlinx capsules? In your other products, the count is shown, but this one is just listed as: Lactobacillis crispatus (CUL 221). It also lists HLC LAB4 Consortium as an ingredient, and I would like to know what that is for? Additionally what does "No FOS" mean?

A. According to Pharmax each HLC Mindlinx capsule contains: 4-6 billion cells of LAB4 strains; 2-3 billion cells of L crispatus; 2-3 billion cells of L rhamnosus.

The 'CUL 221' is Pharmax's culture number for this strain. It does not mean 221 million. The HLC LAB4 Consortium refers to the 4 main strains they use in most of their probiotic products. These 4 strains have the most research that prove they are beneficial and remain active in the intestines much longer than other types of probiotic strains. These are the 4 strains in the LAB4:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL 60)
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL 21)
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL 20)
  • Bifidobacterium lactis (CUL 34)

  • "No FOS" means there is no fructoligiosaccharides (FOS) in this product. FOS is an ingredient provided as a food source for the beneficial organisms. It helps keep them alive longer in the intestines, however, this ingredient can also feed bad bacteria and it not beneficial for people who have intestinal problems, at least until their intestines are well colonized with good bacteria and the bad ones removed. At that point we start to recommend a probiotic with FOS.

Candida caused by Asthma and Antibiotics
    Q. I have asthma which recently evolved into bronchitis. The Dr. put me on an antibiotic and prednisone. I am much worse even though my lungs are clear, chest xray negative, and oxygen levels up. The Dr. thinks the prednisone may have caused a systemic yeast so he prescribed 10 diflucan pills. I did a little research online and can see that the diflucan is a temporary answer. I will have to take it b/c I am extremely uncomfortable in the upper resp. area but what can I use as a more permanent solution to this?
    A. Since you are dealing with both these problems, I would recommend: OregaRESP, as it will help both conditions. It comes in liquid or pills, which ever you prefer. For acute bronchial infections, take 3-5 capsules two to four times daily until symptoms subside. Then for daily immune support and to fight yeast, take 1-2 capsules with meals or snack twice daily (or empty stomach if tolerated).

It is also VERY important to support your intestines with beneficial probiotics to help push the yeast out. I highly recommend:
    • HLC Intensive - work up to 3 capsules a day for two weeks then reduce to 2 capsules a day for two weeks, then if all is not better at the end of 4 weeks we should add a higher potency probiotic which will help to further colonize your intestines. This product is called HLC Synbiotic.
The HLC Intensive only comes in a quantity of 30 caps, so you might want to order 2 bottles to start. You could go ahead and include the Synboitic with your order, because I think you will most likely need it. The reason I'm not recommending it first is because HLC Synbiotic has FOS, which can feed yeast. The HLC Intensive does not have FOS, therefore it is a better probiotic to use while you are working on clearing out the yeast from your body. Sometimes this takes time. You may need to be on the HLC Intensive longer than 4 weeks for the yeast clearing to take place, and may need to stay on a maintenance probiotic afterward.

Other helpful products are PaleoFiber and PaleoGreens.

    • PaleoFiber - when consumed on an empty stomach will help move out dead and dying yeast, 1 TBSP a day mixed with water &/or a little juice.
    • PaleoGreens - helps immunity and helps keep the body in a more alkaline state. Yeast are less likely to survive in the body when it is more alkaline, 1 TBSP a day mixed with water or juice.
    • Immunitone Plus - this has strong immune boosting herbs, take one capsule, three times a day with meal. You could take 2 caps 3 times a day if you are very sick until you feel better. This will allow your body better support to fight the Candida yeast.
If your yeast infection is real bad, then you may want to go ahead with the Diflucan as prescibed. Dosing varies depending on what the doctor prescribes. If you have any questions about taking this drug, please consult with your pharmacist or physician.

Please keep me posted and let me know if you have any questions!

October 2004 Improvements to All HMF Probiotics
    A.
    1. Increase in microorganism potency in each product (50-335%), and no increase in price
    2. Probiotics contain a new isolated strain of both L. acidophilus and Bifido lactis, each affecting the immune system in different manners.
    3. Prolonged storage life at room temperature (up to 6 months) due to improved fermentation and preservation of freeze-dried microorganisms.
    4. Up to 85% more organisms than label to ensure that viability and label claim are always met.
    5. Resistant to stomach acidity and bile acids even when taken between meals when acidity is strongest.
    6. Scientific evidence showing the exceptional ability of HMF probiotics to attach to the intestinal epithelial cells due to the human-sourced organisms. In addition, they quickly and consistently proliferate the GI tract.
    7. Laboratory tests to confirm potency and purity of HMF products.
    8. No additional cost.

What does the CUL label after each strain mean on the HLC probiotic bottles?
    Q. What does the CUL label after each strain mean on the HLC probiotic bottles?

    A.
The CUL stands for the strength of the Culture that Pharmax has the patent on. So it describes the ownership of this specific culture by Pharmax.

What is more beneficial soil organism based probiotics or human strain probiotics?
    Q. What is more beneficial soil organism based probiotics or human strain probiotics?

    A.
The Soil Organism is very different from the HLC High Potency Probiotics. It does not contain the researched strains of beneficial bacteria and there is some controversy in the nutrition industry as to the benefit of soil organisms. Some practitioners have warned us against using soil organism for people who have very compromised GI function since it could actually do some harm. Others have found it to be quite helpful.

The strains in HLC products are not Soil Organisms (HSOs). Instead, HLC is Human Lactic Commensals, which have been isolated from a healthy woman and replicated in the lab. Thus, all the organisms in HLC naturally exist in the GI tract and they implant quite well because the body recognizes them as "self". The human strains in HLC have been extensively researched over the last 10 years and shown to adhere quite well.

With only 4 strains, how does HLC Probiotics replenish the GI so well?
    Q. Why does HLC High Potency probiotics contain only 4 strains? And how does it actually succeed in replenishing the GI so well?

    A.
The answer is that after 15+ years of research, scientists discovered that not all the bacteria in our GI are beneficial, and that many were neutral or had had very mild positive effects. Some were more helpful in men or women, some better in children.

However, 4 strains in particular showed to have immense positive effects time and time again, and in all people. These positive effects were anti-inflammatory, anti-Candida, pro-immune system, and relieved acute intestinal upset in adults and children, women and men. So in order to make the most effective product, they decided to include only the 4 strains which showed to be the “super star” probiotics with a flawless record for its beneficial effects.

HLC High Potency & HLC Intensive caps. Other than count are they different?
    Q. Are the HLC High Potency Probiotic Caps by Pharmax 120 caps the same product as the HLC Intensive Capsules, and only the bottle count is different?

    A.
While HLC High Potency caps contain a little FOS, the HLC Intensive caps do not. FOS is a pre-biotic which feeds the beneficial bacteria, but some people with severe GI problems and Candida cannot tolerate FOS for the first week or two of supplementation and treatment, so for these clients I usually recommend HLC Intensive for the first 10 days (3 caps per day), and then HLC High Potency powder or caps for the following 1-3 months.

The HLC High Potency powder and HLC Intensive Synergy powder contain significantly more FOS than any of the capsule products.

If you get symptoms of excessive gas and bloating after taking a product containing FOS, you know that 1) your really need to continue taking probiotics since it means you have too many unfavorable organisms in the GI and not enough beneficial bacteria, and 2) the FOS is causing the gas/bloating, but the symptoms will subside within 2-10 days depending on severity of imbalance.

Are Probiotics & fish oil better separate or would the Four pillars be better?
    Q. Are the probiotic and fish oil better in separate form or would you recommend the Four pillars?

    A.
I wanted to mention that there are certain patients who will definitely benefit from taking fish oils or probiotics in addition to what is contained in Four Pillars Pack. When taken in high doses, they can be incredibly therapeutic to heal any inflammation. For example, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, heart disease, and asthma, as well as skin conditions such as psoriasis/eczema, are all greatly improved with high doses of fish oil liquid (1 Tbsp per day or more).

The research and clinical data is quite impressive. My favorite product is Finest Pure Fish Oils by Pharmax due to its purity and lack of fishy taste. My fiancé and I take a tablespoon every day. (as a side note, it has cured his severe psoriasis and he stopped his soriatane medication months ago).

Also, high dose probiotics are incredibly therapeutic for any time of gastrointestinal problems, antibiotic therapy side effects and recovery, as well as immune system enhancement. High dose means 1 tsp to 3 tablespoons per day after meals. Also, the packets of HLC Synbiotic Intensive are very powerful for both re-establishing flora and have anti-inflammatory effects.

Please read more about these two great supplements:
Finest Pure Fish Oil by Pharmax, HLC High Potency Probiotic by Pharmax Or HLC Intensive probiotic caps.

For those of you who are chiropractors, there are many great recorded seminars from nutrition experts available on MP3s format at Crayhon Research who hosts the best seminars each year.

What is an effective way to give HLC High Potency powder easily to kids?
    Q. Can the Pharmax HLC High Potency powder be added to milk or something so that my kids can more easily take it? Or maybe sprinkled on something? Does this reduce it's effectiveness?
    A. You may add the probiotic to food or beverages (but not hot ones), or have them take it right off the spoon since it tastes quite good. This will not reduce its effectiveness.

    2. Are there any advantages to the capsules vs. the powder or vice versa? What about cost advantages?

    A. The only advantage of capsules vs. powder is convenience of swallowing caps vs. taking out a spoon and mixing the powder into water or food. The advantage of powder is price. Powders will always cost less than capsule gram for gram since there is an extra cost for encapsulating the product.

    3. When I put my finger in the Neonate as directed it looks like hardly any of the powder sticks, but maybe this is all that is needed. Is it true that such a fine amount is the right dosage?

    A. Yes, this tiny amount of HLC Neonate appropriate for your 4 month old infant. Yet, you may safely increase the dose to remedy acute symptoms by either wetting your finger first, or using half of a ¼ teaspoon measure.

4.These probiotics were recommended to me by our nutritionist and she suggested that the whole family can benefit. We have 4 children—ages 8, 6, 3 & 4 mos—what would your recommendation be as to dosage for them?

    A. The dosage does depend on their health condition. If they are healthy and they are taking probiotics to maintain their immune systems and prevent food allergies and gastrointestinal problems, they can take a maintenance dose of ¼ teaspoon per day (or even just a few times a week). If they have been on antibiotics in the last year, or have Candida, GI problems, allergies, or skin conditions, they can take a higher “active dose” which is ½ teaspoon once or twice daily for 1-3 months. The dosage for probiotics can safely be modified according to symptom improvement since these organisms are quite safe and it is not possible to ‘overdose’ on them.

What amount of HLC Probiotics do I give my dairy sensitive 4 & 7 yo kids?
    Q. I am 4 months pregnant, and gluten intolerance, allergies, and food sensitivities run in my family, so I am taking them to help my unborn baby. I also have a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old who suffer from gluten intolerance, dairy sensitivity, and mild eczema. What dosage would be appropriate for them to take? (They are 60 pounds and 36 pounds).

    A. Thanks for contacting us. HLC probiotic is a great choice for you during your pregnancy and to help your unborn baby with allergies, food sensitivities and eczema. You’ll need to continue taking them throughout the time you nurse your baby, and once your baby is born, you should get the HLC Neonate product which is specific for infants 0-12 months. The ongoing 5 year trial on HLC probiotics in newborn infants shows those who were given probiotics during the first year of life did significantly better than those who did not with allergies, skin conditions, asthma, and food sensitivities.

Your 4 and 7 year old children can safely take ½ of the adult dose of HLC High Potency probiotic powder. The first month, have them take ¼ teaspoon twice daily after meals. Then, they can reduce it down to ¼ tsp per day as a maintenance dose. There is no toxicity with probiotics, so the only side effect of taking “too much” might be a little gas.

Be advised that for the first few days of supplementation with any product containing FOS, having a little gas is normal and indicates that there are not enough good strains of beneficial bacteria implanted in the GI. But as the probiotics implant, the symptoms go away.

Are rubber plug and screw cap necessary on refrigerated HLC probiotic capsules?
    Q. I buy your HLC high potency capsules by Pharmax and am wondering about the double top on the bottle—the combination of a rubber plug and a screw-on top. And once I open the bottle, do I need to keep both tops or can I discard one? (I do keep it refrigerated.)

    A. Thank you for contacting us. The rubber plug on the Pharmax High Potency glass bottles is to vacuum seal the product for optimal shelf life & storage before it is shipped to you. Once you receive the bottle, you can remove and discard the rubber seal. I personally keep the rubber seal on other products like the Pharmax Finest Pure Fish Oil liquid since I travel with my fish oils and the rubber stopper can help prevent HLC High Potency leaking during airplane travel.

Refrigeration of the HLC High Potency probiotics is advisable but not necessary if you plan to use the product within one month. When they arrive to you, they have about 125% potency compared to their label amounts. In addition, their shelf life is 3-6 months at room temperature, so you have the option of keeping them with you in your purse, on your desk at work, or during travel without concern for refrigeration. Keep them away from direct heat when possible.

If you purchase several bottles at a time like I do, keep them in the freezer or fridge to store them indefinitely with 100% potency.

Are Probiotics effective for people with an Ileostomy?
    Q. I have an ileostomy. Do you know if the probiotics you carry are effective in a person like me since I am without my entire colon?

    A. Using the Pharmax HLC probiotics will be especially beneficial to your GI especially since you do not have your entire colon.
The amounts you have left of your colon need to function incredibly well and have optimal absorption of nutrients.

I highly recommend you read more about and try HLC High Potency Powder.

Or if you prefer capsules, HLC Intensive is a great choice.

Would sensitivity to Glutamine (leg spasm) in Mindlinx increase excitotoxicity?
Q: I have celiac disease. My naturopath suggested Mindlinx. I notice it has 500mg glutamine per capsule. Every time I start taking L-glutamine I seem to have problems with muscle spasms (like popcorn popping sensation, especially in legs but not limited to). Also, I seem to get other neurological symptoms. I have read that an enzyme that converts glutamine to glutamate called glutanimase increases tremendously, thereby greatly increasing excitotoxicity. Because my father had MS ( I also believe he was an undiagnosed celiac), I am wondering if I might have the increased possibility. Dr. Blaylock reports say people with any autoimmune disorder especially MS, ALS should totally stay away from any amount of it.

    A. The HLC Intensive probiotic capsule does not contain any Glutamine or FOS, so you could try this product instead of the HLC Mindlinx.

    Labels:

I think my child is allergic to glutamine in HLC Mindlinx? Is that possible?
    Q. I think my child is allergic to glutamine in HLC Mindlinx? Is that possible?

    A.
Glutamine is an amino acid found in meats and vegetables, therefore it is almost impossible that your child is actually allergic to glutamine, or they would also be allergic to these foods. However, if the flora is very much out of balance the unwanted bacteria can produce ammonia from glutamine, which is obviously not desirable because ammonia is a mild toxin.

I would suggest that you start out with one of the other probiotic products (HLC Intensive or High Potency), Finest Pure Fish Oil, and plant antimicrobials, such as Alli-Cinn. When the GI tract has been restored you could re-introduce HLC Mindlinx

When starting antibiotics for a few months, how will taking Probiotics help me?
    Q. I will be taking antibiotics for a few months. Should I start taking probiotics? How will it benefit me?

    A.
Since you’ve decided you will be taking antibiotics, this is the perfect time to start taking your Probiotics. Have you read the research summarized on our site about the critical importance of taking probiotics during antibiotic use?

Numerous research studies show that the reason antibiotics cause so many negative side effects is because it wipes out the good bacteria in all parts of your system (intestines, urinary tract, and reproductive tract). Once these are killed off, Candida and other unfavorable yeast grow out of balance causing your immune system to be weakened. It typically takes several months for people to recover after antibiotic use. It has been shown that taking probiotics DURING and AFTER antibiotic use will prevent this imbalance in your system, allowing you to keep side effects minimal, and keeping your immune system strong. If you take the probiotics only after the antibiotics and not during, the benefits are not as strong.

I highly recommend you begin taking the HLC High Potency capsules as soon as possible. Take 2 twice daily after meals.

Is HLC High Potency OK for my 2 yr old?
    Q. Is HLC High Potency OK for my 2 yr old?

    A.
It is perfectly safe for your 2 year old to use HLC High Potency probiotic. The HLC Neonate is designed for infants under 1 year of age. After 1 year, you can use the HLC High Potency for your infant.

    Labels:

Is HLC Neonate by Pharmax safe to restore a newborn baby's flora?
    Q. Is HLC Neonate by Pharmax safe to restore a newborn baby's flora?

    A.
HLC Neonate is very safe for your infant and will most definitely help re-establish her natural flora, improve her digestion, and reduce her gas.

Yes, it is true that when a breast feeding mother takes antibiotics, both she and her infant's flora are wiped out since the antibiotics are carried through the breast milk. Studies show that colicky infants benefit from taking infant probiotics for 6 months or more to successfully re-establish the natural flora. It is possible that you will notice the improvement within days, but continue to give her the HLC Neonate for a few months to ensure good implantation of the probiotic.

    Labels:

Is it safe to take HLC Probiotics by Pharmax during pregnancy?
    Q. Is it safe to take HLC Probiotics by Pharmax during pregnancy?

    A.
HLC High Potency probiotic caps by Pharmax are very safe to take during pregnancy. In fact, it is highly recommended to take them since the probiotics will help your wife replenish the good flora in her intestinal track strengthening not only her GI but her immune system, in turn allowing a healthier pregnancy.

In addition, it is very important to keep a good balance of healthy flora in the mother’s vaginal track so that during delivery, the baby is not exposed to yeast overgrowth (leading to Thrush and other yeast related conditions common in infants). Newborns are not prepared to fight against yeast their first few months of life. Furthermore, it is hugely beneficial that a mother continue to take HLC probiotics during breastfeeding since this will transfer the good bacteria to the infant providing him/her with powerful immunity against allergies and skin conditions.

A 5 year scientific study will be published in the next year showing that newborns given a probiotic supplement the first 6 months of life have significantly less health problems including allergies and skin conditions, than those who do not.

Pharmax LLC makes a supplement specifically for newborns – HLC Neonate – which comes in a powder form.

Can I insert a Probiotic capsule or anti-yeast suppository while using Estring?
    Q. Is there any danger in inserting probiotic capsules or any anti-yeast suppositories when wearing an Estring?

    A.
HLC High Potency capsules are not intended to be used vaginally since they contain FOS which is meant for the Gastrointestinal tract and not the vagina.

I highly recommend you switch to HLC Candaclear probiotic suppositories. These are not encapsulated and dissolve quite easily. They also come with an applicator which allows you to insert them as far in as possible so they do not come out.

You can continue to take the HLC High Potency capsules orally during antibiotic use (2 per day twice daily after meals), and use one HLC Candaclear once or twice daily for 6-12 days to prevent yeast infections which usually accompany antibiotic use.

Can I alleviate gas by taking HLC High Potency capsules instead of HLC High Potency Powder?
    Q. I've been taking HLC High Potency powder for a few months now, and I notice that I have a lot of gas; could that be from the powder?

    A.
The reason why you have a lot of gas could be the FOS included in the High Potency powder. This symptom is actually a sign that your intestinal micro-flora is still not in balance and that you would benefit from taking some probiotics.

If you feel too much bloating and gas, I would suggest that you first take the HLC Intensive caps, which does not contain any FOS.

HLC Intensive caps by Pharmax: We recommend a 10 day treatment on HLC Intensive (3 caps per day) and then HLC High Potency powder. If you find you are still having gas and bloating while using the High Potency powder, then increase the dose of HLC Intensive to 1 cap 3x daily after meals for 5+ days, and then take the High Potency powder every other day before bed (so you won't notice any bloating since you're asleep).

As you continue to take the probiotics, these symptoms will completely go away and you'll know you're doing much better!

Protein for picky child who doesn't like protein powder
Q: What would you suggest as a protein supplement for my 12 yr old son who eats only carbs and refuses to eat protein? He will swallow pills but doesn't like protein powders.

    A.
Ideally, you should work on getting your son to start eating some protein rich foods. Some ways you can do this are:
    • egg fortified pancakes or muffins,
    • yogurt with fruit and nuts,
    • almond butter,
    • fried rice with extra egg,
    • cream soups using whole milk.
Of course, chicken, fish, and red meats are healthy too. One thing I have found true in children who do not eat proteins is that it often stems from a deficiency of healthy bacteria in the gut. Since the gut is essential to digest protein, children who are deficient literally cannot digest protein, and therefore refuse it. Lack of good bacteria is caused by lack of breastfeeding and antibiotics or other meds. Is this applicable?

Try giving him HLC High Potency Probiotics by Pharmax to restore his gut function. It tastes very good and is administered as a powder with excellent compliance by children. (give him 1/4 tsp. twice daily to begin. Retry protein foods in small quantities to find out if he tolerates them better in about 1-2 weeks)

For now, since your son will not take any protein powders, here is a capsule supplement that he would do well on: Enteric Amino Complex by Pharmax 90 caps

Depending on how his protein needs (based on weight, health level, and physical activity), he would need about 8-10 capsules 2x per day between meals. You will need about 1 bottle per week.

What is the distinction between prebiotics and probiotics?
Q: What is the distinction between prebiotics and probiotics?

    A.
Probiotics are living bacteria that are typically isolated from the healthy intestine and which, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer a disease preventative or positive health benefit upon the consumer.

    Their benefits:
    • Protect against intestinal infection, overgrowth or dysbiosis
    • Prime the immune system from Bitrh to deliver the Correct Immune response
    • Prevent and treat allergy
    • Reduce intestinal inflammation
    • Stimulate digestion of nutrients such as lactose, and increase absorption of minerals
    • Decrease absorption of dietary cholesterol due to probiotic binding
    • Decrease production of intestinal mutagens.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food components that have 2 fundamental benefits:

    • Stimulation of the normal intestinal Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli populations.
    • Stimulation of production of the short chain fatty acids.

The most popular probiotics are Fructooligasaccharid es (FOS).
Basically prebiotics allow probiotics to multiply.

Will HLC Mindlinx allow me to eat gluten and casein which I am sensitive to?
Q: Will taking HLC Mindlinx allow me to safely consume gluten and casein which I am sensitive to?

    A.
HLC MindLinx will help you better tolerate and breakdown gluten, casein (all dairy), soy and eggs. Yet, much will depend on your level of sensitivity to these allergens. If your sensitivity is mild, you may find that taking Mindlinx will allow you to consume some casein and gluten with little to no side effects. Yet, if your sensitivity is severe such as with Celiacs Disease, you may find that your body better tolerates accidental consumption or trace amounts of gluten. Those with Autism and ADHD have benefited since these allergens can have profound effects on brain chemistry.

The ingredients within the formula including glutamine and special strains of probiotics, will help strengthen the GI tract so that you are better able to tolerate these food sensitivities when you come into contact with them. By strengthening the villi in the stomach lining and helping break down gluten and casein, you are less likely to have a reaction to these foods when found in trace amounts.

Autism, Is HLC Mindlinx 100% casein free, not grown on dairy? Glutamine excitotoxin?
Q: Is HLC Mindlinx 100% casein free, and not grown on dairy? Second, I heard L-Glutamine can become an excitotoxin if not converted to GABA, a process which most people on the autism spectrum could have trouble with, so I am concerned about giving Mindlinx to my son [who is] on the spectrum.

    A. Yes, HLC Mindlinx (and all HLC probiotics) are not derived from dairy, thus are 100% free of casein. Second, every study about the level of amino acids on autistic children shows that they are deficient in glutamine. In addition, the vast majority of autistic children have GI tract issues and glutamine is the most important nutrient for the upper part of the GI tract. This surely indicates that glutamine could be a very important supplement for people who are autistic.

The three amino acids glutamic acid (GA), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and glutamine (GAM) are closely related and all involved in proper brain function. GA is an excitatory neurotransmitter, GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and GAM controls that GA and GABA are in balance. GAM can be converted to both GA and GABA. If adequate vitamin B6 is not present the conversion from GAM to GABA is inhibited and GA could be upregulated. Other factors, which I am not aware of, could potentially upregulate the conversion from GAm to GA, and GAM, therefore, might not be a beneficial supplement for autistic children. However, I would still like to mention that all studies on amino acids levels show that autistic children are deficient in glutamine.

If you have any concerns, you can start your child on HLC Intensive which does not contain any glutamine and use this product for a month or two for intensive gut repair, then switch to HLC Mindlinx.

Infant with strep throat on antibiotics for 2 months needs recommendations for damage.
Q: Our 2 1/2 year old adopted daughter (Chinese) has a very resistant strep throat and has been on antibiotics for almost 2 months. The infection keeps coming back voraciously and thus they keep changing the antibiotic. I am very concerned about the damage caused by the antibiotic. Can you make a recommendation for me?

    A. First, use the HLC Intensive Probiotic by Pharmax which is the strongest one available. One capsule twice daily with meals. You will need to open the capsule for her and sprinkle it on food (taste is very mild) since she is too young to swallow caps.

In addition, I highly recommend Garlic Freeze Dried by Pharmax to go along the probiotic treatment. You can buy smaller empty capsules in the health food stores to re-package the contents into several smaller caps and get her to swallow them (not a great taste if mixed into food). If this doesn't work you could try hiding the Freeze Dried Garlic powder in apple sauce or something similar. Lastly, remove all dairy products from her diet as dairy will exacerbate strep infections.

Why take Probiotics after meals instead of on an empty stomach?
Q: Why do you recommend probiotics be taken after meals instead of on an empty stomach? (i.e.HLC High Potency, HLC Mindlinx, HLC Intensive probiotics)

    A.
It used to be advised to take probiotics on an empty stomach based on the logic of not having food combining with the probiotics. However, after some research, it was shown that the adherence rate is superior when bacteria are taken with food, such as 10 minutes after a meal. This is because the pH in the stomach is less acid after a meal, and therefore the bacteria can more easily survive.

Most practitioners now recommend taking probiotics after eating. Yet, these probiotics are resilient enough to survive through strong stomach acid as well. Basically, take them when you can!

Q: What is in the base of all HLC probiotics and what is the source of FOS (i.e. HLC Intensive, HLC High Potency Powder, HLC Mindlinx, HLC Synbiotic)

    A.
The base of the HLC probiotics contains FOS derived from Chicory Root and a Vegetable syrup base. There is NO glucose in the product. The beneficial bacteria is grown on a medium which contain glucose derived from vegetable syrup as a food source. The bacteria is then extracted/ separated from its growth medium. Apricot powder is added for flavor and is vegetarian, vegan and Kosher, as well as free from nuts, gluten, egg, fish, dairy, lactose, wheat, yeast, sugar, salt, crustaceans, starch, and gelatin.

Why does HLC Intensive help vaginal health and even out moods?
Q: I have been taking the HLC Intensive Probiotic for yeast imbalance and vaginal health, and I have found that and it has evened out my moods considerably. Why is this?

    A. You are feeling more mentally balanced because of your improved gut function. The gut and brain are known to be sister organs in Chinese Medicine.
    • First, all of your neurotransmitters are essentially made in the gut, but only with the help of good bacteria, which you now have.
    • Second, B-vitamins-essential for brain function- are also literally manufactured in the gut with help of your healthy bacteria.
    • Third, a better working gut improves all of nutrient absorption, needed for a chemically balanced brain. You may also notice better immune function, metabolism, skin, hormone, etc. improvements because of your improved digestion.

Dysbiosis: Does FOS feed unwanted GI bacteria ?
Q: I have severe gut dysbiosis. Can FOS feed existing unwanted bacteria in the GI or does it only feed the good bacteria?

    A.
We always recommend that clients with severe gut dysbiosis first begin their program with HLC Intensive probiotics (which contains no FOS). After 10 or 20 days of this pure probiotic, most GI ecosystems have improved significantly and will greatly benefit from FOS containing products such as HLC High Potency or HLC Synbiotic packets.

Q: Any recommendations for Post-nasal drip?

    A.
Often this problem stems from digestive issues and systemic candida. It may be exacerbated by certain foods in the diet, namely dairy and sugar. Eliminate these to see progress. Here are some supplement suggestions which will work from the inside out:

HLC Probiotics: First begin with HLC Intensive, cap with each meal for 10 days. Then progress to HLC High Potency—1 tsp per day with a meal ongoing for several months.

Oreganol by North American Herb and Spice: Take 1-2 caps with meals. This kills yeast and helps the respiratory system.

Alli-Cinn, by Pharmax: Take 1 cap with meals twice daily.

Q: How can there be live bacteria in HLC Probiotics if the product has been freeze dried?

    A.
Bacteria survive perfectly when frozen. Freezing it prevents any degradation which would occur if heated. Pharmax (maker of HLC and HMF Probiotics) is a pharmaceutical leader in probiotics and has developed special methods for producing and preserving healthy bacteria. They benefit thousands of our clients, and I am confident they will help you too!

Since HLC Candaclear & Probiotics are humanly derived are there any health risks?
Q: I am concerned that HLC Candaclear and HLC Probiotics are derived from humans. Are there any health risk implications (such as viruses or other diseases) because it comes from humans?

    A.
There are several measures taken to ensure that HLC Candaclear and all HLC probiotics are completely safe.

First, viruses such as HIV are not transferred via bacteria. Bacteria are not know to carry viruses. Yet, mammalian cells can. Therefore it is of potential health risk to eat raw meat or shellfish. Read more details below on viruses and transmission.

Second, the bacteria isolated for HLC probiotics are highly screened to ensure only healthy bacteria are selected and replicated. The selection process of the strains in HLC probiotics was one which took many years and originated over 26 years ago in the laboratory.

In order to select the best strains, Pharmax’s rigorous screening process ensures that only non-pathogenic, friendly bacteria are selected. Each batch is tested and receives a certificate of analysis by a third party. These bacteria are so safe, that they are considered safe for and regularly used in infants by physicians around the world.

Scientists needed to test 100’s of bacteria for their effects on the human GI, vagina, and immune system, adherence properties, stability at different temperatures, survival rate at low pH in the stomach, etc. As a result, these bacteria have such an impressive safety profile that they have been approved in a number of scientific trials on newborn infants! (Very few scientific experiments qualify as safe enough for infant testing & use.)

By isolating strains of human origin (vs animal, plant, or dairy), the scientists were able to select strains that are much better adapted for colonization in the human GI tract. This ensures optimal adherence properties for the selected strains and makes the HLC probiotics superior and more effective than other types of probiotics.

    More on Viruses
Viruses use a receptor on some of the cells of the immune system to enter a human cell, but these receptors don't exist on bacteria and the virus cannot enter a bacteria. Even if it could it would never be able to replicate because bacteria don't have the 'tools' for viruses to replicate.

Were all HLC probiotics originally derived from human strains?
Q: Were all HLC probiotics originally derived from human strains?

    A.
Yes, HLC probiotics (including HLC Candaclear) were originally derived from humans back many years ago. Once the ideal strains were found, they were tested, isolated, and replicated in the laboratory.

The Bifidobacterium mother culture (original batch), was isolated from feces and the Lactobacillus mother culture was isolated from vaginal cells. By isolating strains of human origin (vs animal, plant, or dairy), the scientists were able to select strains that are much better adapted for colonization in the human GI tract. This ensures optimal adherence properties for the selected strains and makes the HLC probiotics superior and more effective than other types of probiotics.

While taking antibiotics, which products prevent yeast infection?
Q: I'm going to be taking antibiotics soon & I would like to know which product(s) you recommend to maintain my balance. I am prone to yeast infection.

    A.
You have a couple of options which will help you maintain your healthy flora through and post antibiotic therapy. If you are not sensitive to FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides), I suggest HLC Synbiotic Intensive . These are packets of powder, of which you should take a half pack a day during the therapy and then 1/2 pack twice daily (1 pack total per day) once finished with therapy for 7-14 days.

If you are sensitive to FOS, take HLC Intensive (no FOS)—take 1 cap twice daily during antibiotics, then 1 cap 3 times daily following for 7-14 days.

After 2 weeks of either, you should continue taking probiotics, but can reduce the amount which you take to 1/4 pack of Synbiotic and 1 or 2 caps daily of Intensive.

Which probiotic can help restore good bacteria after C-diff medication?
Q: I have been fighting C-diff (Clostridium Difficile) for about 9 months now and am taking Rx medication but it kills off all of your good bacteria. I looked at your Probiotics products, but I wasn't sure which one would be best for my situation.

    A. In order to recolonize your gut to prevent reinfection, it is important that you take probiotics during your antibiotics treatment and beyond for 2-3 months, plus maintenance dosing afterward. The latest research shows a much higher risk of reinfection if you wait to start probiotics until after finishing antibiotics. During the antibiotic course and for 20 days afterward, take HLC Intensive probiotics. These are stage 1 probiotics without any FOS, and are effective at implantation of healthy bacteria. Take 1 cap with each meal, totaling 3 daily. (One bottle lasts 10 days)

Following HLC Intensive (approximately 20 days), move to HLC Synbiotic Intensive powder. This becomes stage II- colonization of healthy bacteria. Take 1 full pack daily (split into 2 doses) in water for 1-2 weeks. You can then reduce dosing to 1/2 packet daily for another 2-3 months (you may be able to reduce to 1/4 packet daily to help with cost.)

What Probiotic do you recommend for myself & my baby that is economical?
Q: I'm looking for a great probiotic for myself and my baby but I want to save money. What do you recommend?

    A.
If your baby is under 2, the HLC Neonate by Pharmax is excellent. If she's older, the HLC High Potency Powder is wonderful for adults and kids. It contains FOS which feeds the beneficial bacteria. FOS can be problematic for those who have severe gut disbiosis and virtually no good bacteria in their gut as it can feed the yeast and cause gas. HLC Intensive capsules contain no FOS and some people prefer them.

If you guys need a great quality maintenance product and are looking to save money, I use the HLC High Potency Powder. Just a 1/3 tsp a day is plenty, it tastes great, and comes out to $13.63 p/month if you get the 120g size. If you or your baby have gluten or casein intolerance, HLC Mindlinx is the only product found to directly target these proteins and help digest them before they leak out of your gut and cause allergic symptoms.

When it comes to probiotics, you tend to get what you pay for, so I would not recommend saving money by getting a cheaper brand that claims to have equal or more strains. These live organisms are so special that if you invest in a brand that has the best strains (i.e. human strains proven to adhere to the GI), you won't need to use as much to get a great effect. Also, there are a number of strains which are neither beneficial nor harmful—just neutral. No need to buy a product that contains those. In other words, just because a product lists 10 strains doesn't mean it's better than one which lists 4. Lastly, you pay more for capsules vs powder (dollar for gram), so always choose powder form when you are looking to save money.

Over the last 8 years, I've attended many seminars given by microbiologists on probiotics, and I've learned that the strains and the technology used by the manufacturer has everything to do with the efficacy of the probiotic. I am very impressed with the years of research and development done by Pharmax LLC who makes the HLC probiotics, and have decided to used these for myself, my family, and my clients—all with excellent results. They are the only company who have done such extensive clinical trials on their products. Here are some summaries of their research: Clinical Research Trials on HLC Probiotics

Pharmax is a European company who has discovered that the human strains implant in the GI significantly better than animal or dairy based strains because the body recognizes it as "self". They also limited the types of strains in each product to be only the ones proven to be 100% beneficial all the time in humans rather than including a bunch of strains which can have neutral effects. Lastly, they include 30% more probiotics in each bottle than what is stated on the label so that even after 6 months at room temperature, you are sure to get the minimum amount listed on the label. Other companies list the maximum possible amount at time of manufacturing. In result, the strains in their Pharmax HLC probiotics are all beneficial ones, they are contained in larger amounts than listed, and adhere much better than dairy based or animal based strains. There are a number of testimonials on these great probiotics from people who have tried all different kinds out there and come to realize that these work the best: HLC Probiotics and testimonials.
