Nordic Naturals ProAlgen™ is obtained from a naturally occurring, non-genetically modified microalgae, and is extracted using a 100% hexane-free method.

At Nordic Naturals, we are well aware of the media attention and concerns surrounding the use of hexane in algal oil extraction, and would like to assure our customers that we take great care in sourcing an oil that is extracted using a chemical-free method, and without hexane.

While the algal oil used to fortify many infant formulas comes from a particular species of microalgae called Crypthecodinium cohnii (C. cohnii), Nordic Naturals’ algal products are made from an entirely different species, called Schizochytrium. The two species have different physical structures and thus require different methods of extraction.

The oil derived from the Schizochytrium species used in Nordic Naturals’ products is extracted by way of a non-GMO enzyme. This enzyme’s role is to rupture the cell wall and release the oil. Isopropyl alcohol is then added to separate the oil from the water. The alcohol is removed by evaporation and distillation, and no detectable residues remain in the final product (a Certificate of Analysis is available upon request). Please note: All ingredients used in the processing of Nordic Naturals’ algal oil are either food grade or of higher quality.

We also want to assure our customers that the algal oil we have sourced for our products is non- GMO. The genus of algae used in Nordic Naturals products is simply the result of a new yield hybridization project. It is the result of crossing two species within the same genus to optimize EPA and DHA levels. This technique is frequently utilized in classical plant breeding that employs the deliberate crossing of closely related species to produce new crop varieties with desirable properties such as high yield. In contrast, the type of genetic modification that is so controversial happens much higher up the biological classification system, for example, between organisms of different classes, orders or families, etc.
